I love the month of October! It’s such a fun spooky season for the whole family to enjoy!
I think, like most parents, the best part of October is getting to experience all the magic of Halloween through your kids’ eyes.
My kids and I love to dress up in used Halloween costumes, (even if my husband doesn’t), and I enjoy going to the store and seeing all the robotic witches, skeletons, and inflatables they start putting out at the end of August.
The other day I walked into Lowe’s with my kids and my little 2-year-old boy got so completely freaked out by one of the grim reaper inflatables, he started crying!
Is it bad that I kind of enjoy when my kids get a little scared?
One year when my oldest daughter was a toddler, we went to Target and checked out all the Halloween décor in the back of the store.
There was this one candy bowl that had a black bat perched on the edge of it. When you walked by the bowl, his red eyes would light up and he’d say things like, “Go ahead, have one! I did, and look at me!”
My daughter was very disturbed by this and kept holding onto me while I stifled a laugh, yet she didn’t want to leave it either.
My mom calls it being, “Deliciously scared.”
With all the magic of Halloween in the air, it’s easy to go overboard on decorations.
The nice thing about this holiday is that you can make your own decorations for relatively cheap, and have a fun time doing it with your kids.
Here are some easy DIY Halloween decoration ideas I found that are cheap, easy, and fun!
Most of these fun ideas use simple materials and basic supplies that literally make the best DIY Halloween decorations. You’ll have a great time creating your very own scary Halloween decorations that you can use over and over again.
Cheap Halloween Decorations
When it comes to making cheap Halloween decorations, there are some things I highly recommend picking up this time of year from the Dollar Tree Store to helpmake creating spooky Halloween decorations a breeze! (You can also head to a local craft store for many of these cheap DIY Halloween decorations a well.)
- Spider webs
- Black and orange construction paper
- LED lights(for fake candles)
- Small plastic pumpkins
- Tombstones
While you have to buy the above items in bulk if you buy online from the Dollar Tree, many items can be shipped to a local store for free local pick-up!
The spider webs in a bag can be spread over your trees, doors, bushes, anywhere! It’s only $1 each for a big bag, and one bag goes a long way!
If you have a bunch of black and orange construction paper on hand you can cut out various Halloween things, like black cats, pumpkins, witches, and moons, and tape them on your doors or windows.

Or do something a little more fancy like these paper chains. This makes for fast and cute Halloween decorations for simple spooky fun.
The LED lights and candles are great for adding an eerie glow to some of your easy-to-make Halloween decorations instead of placing real fire candles inside your Jack-o-lanterns or other Halloween crafts.
Little plastic pumpkins are good for corners of the house and corners of your porch that remain undecorated.
I looked at a bunch of tutorials for tombstones online, and honestly, you should just buy them at the Dollar Tree. It’s easier and cheaper than doing it yourself!
Of course, if you don’t want to buy in bulk, and still want to find cheap Halloween decorations online, rather than in-store, I always hit up Amazon because they are fairly competitive in their pricing.
DIY Halloween Decorations for Outside
I found tons and tons of really great ideas for decorating your home at Halloween, but I tried to pick the ones that I could actually picture myself doing.
To me, a craft that requires special supplies that I’ll never use again or involves the use of a saw is not easy, cheap, or practical.
Basically, most of the DIY outdoor Halloween decorations I highlight on here are the super-easy Halloween DIY decorations that my 6-year-old and I could do together.

Now, let’s move inside the house for some easy home Halloween decorations you can make without too much work or creativity.
One year at church we made a craft very similar to these cute ghost jars!
They are so ridiculously easy to make. All you need are some Mason jars, white chalk paint, some paintbrushes, googly eyes, a hot glue gun, and some tea lights to put inside and make them glow. I’ve also seen a similar craft where the jar was wrapped in cloth on the outside to look like a mummy!
DIY Spider Halloween Decoration Idea
This DIY Hanging spider sack craft takes a few extra steps, but it’s so worth it for the end result!
These are a great way to create some Halloween fun that everyone will like. They’re also cute for a party theme or to pair with giant spiders as well!

Easy Floating Ghost Decoration for Halloween
Everyone loves floating ghosts, right? But it’s not often you have spare bed sheets you can cut up to make ghosts with. That’s why I love these ghosts made out of cheesecloth!
Sure, you can get the plastic ones from the Dollar Store, but last year when I got those and it was really windy one day, they flew off into the distance never to be seen again. I like these cheesecloth ghosts because they look more authentic and they’re still cheap and easy to make scary Halloween decoration!
