Summer is winding down; backpacks are being dusted off and school is getting ready to start back up. In honor of the new school year beginning, I thought these crochet numbers would make the perfect little set. These would make a great teacher gift or even for use at home by little ones who aren’t in school yet. They make a wonderfully tangible way to learn numbers (and colors when you make them in a rainbow of hues)!
These numbers are also an awesome scrap buster! Each number doesn’t require much material so this is a good way to use up those little balls of yarn. You know the ones I’m talking about – too small for most projects but still enough yarn that you can’t bear to get rid of it – this is the perfect way to use them!
WHAT MATERIALS DO I NEED TO CROCHET THESE NUMBERS?
- Red Heart Super Saver yarn in Claret, Sky Blue, Spring Green, Bright Yellow, Light Raspberry, Real Teal, Violet, Gold, Dusty Grey and Cherry Red
- Size 7/4.5mm crochet hook
- Yarn needle
- Scissors
- Crochet Numbers, Free Crochet Pattern from Blackstone Design
MATERIAL NOTES:
The pattern says to use a G6/4mm crochet hook. However, knowing that I crochet tightly, I opted to go up a smidge in hook size.
HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO CROCHET THESE NUMBERS?
There are 10 numbers to complete the whole pattern. To make all 10, it took me 2 hours and 10 minutes. I also timed each number as I went and as you’d guess, you can tell which numbers were more complex based on how much time it took me to complete compared to the other ones.
1 took 8.5 minutes. 2 took 15.5 minutes. 3 took 12.5 minutes. 4 took 18.5 minutes. 5 took 14 minutes. 6 took 15.5 minutes. 7 took 6.5 minutes. 8 took 20.5 minutes. 9 took 9 minutes. 0 took 9.5 minutes.
MEASUREMENTS:
If you follow the pattern, the numbers should measure to about 4 inches tall. Even though I used a different size hook, my numbers ended up about 4 inches tall as well. I will say, I do have a fairly tight crochet tension so that may be why.
GAUGE (NOT ESSENTIAL):
There is no gauge given for this pattern from the designer. Using the hook and yarn size that I used, my gauge is 17 stitches by 15 rows to equal 4 inches.
PATTERN NOTES:
This pattern was easy for the most part, with the exception of number 5. I’m not sure why but that one was particularly tricky for me! But after a couple tries, I just suddenly got it, so I am certain it was my error in following the pattern and not the designer’s fault in any way.
There is a special stitch that the designer uses throughout most of the numbers to help achieve the curve of the numbers but not to worry: it is very easy to do!
Overall, this is a great, quick pattern to use up scrap yarn and turn it into a cute and functional piece!
